Mammozzo
Square pizza might not be the most common sight in Salzburg, but for Matteo, it’s a slice of his childhood. Growing up in an Italian family, his summers were filled with sunshine, family gatherings, and — you guessed it — square pizza. When he realized Salzburg was missing this little piece of Rome, he asked his dad if he’d open a square pizza place. The answer? A hard no. So, at just 22 years old, Matteo took matters into his own hands and started Mammozzo.
Why “Mammozzo”? Matteo explained that it holds a sentimental family meaning, but also—it’s unique. And he’s right. Google it, and his website pops right up. His square pizzas aren’t just Instagrammable; they’re seriously delicious.
How does square pizza work?
Simple: Matteo bakes large rectangular pizzas, then cuts them into smaller squares. Perfect for people (like us) who love trying different flavors. You can mix and match slices to create your own pizza combo! The flavours rotate, but you’ll always find classics like Buffala, and for dessert? The Nutella pizza and the Tiramisu are a must-try.
The restaurant itself is super spacious, making it ideal for bigger groups or families—no squeezing into tight corners trying to keep the kids entertained. Plus, the vibe is as friendly as the food is tasty. Matteo personally chats with customers to make sure they’re loving the pizza, and when we visited, both he and Anna (who was working that day) were incredibly welcoming, even when we showed up with a baby in tow.
With fresh ingredients, rotating flavors, and a heartfelt story behind every slice, Mammozzo is more than just another pizza spot — it’s Matteo’s little piece of Rome, right here in Salzburg. And trust me, it’s one worth tasting.
