Die Cabreras

published on 09.11.2024

"Die Cabreras" is a Mexican restaurant in Salzburg that blends traditional flavors with a creative twist. Experience vibrant Mexican dishes and a warm atmosphere that makes you feel at home. Perfect for families, dates and groups alike.

Die Cabreras isn’t a new restaurant - it’s been a staple in Salzburg for a while, though it somehow still feels like a well-kept secret. I’ve been going for six years, and I can honestly say I’ve never had a meal that wasn’t good!

I’d been planning to post about Cabreras for a while, but as with all my favorite places, it’s tough to capture just how much I love it in words. I asked Abraham Cabrera, the owner, if he’d have time for a quick chat, and as always, I’m genuinely surprised when people say yes. We sat down on Día de los Muertos, which somehow made the whole experience even more special.

From our conversation, two things stood out that really capture the heart of Cabreras: First, in Mexican culture, food is how you show love. Second, Cabreras is a place where you’re meant to feel at home - whether you’re with kids, on a date, or in a loud group, you’re welcome'd and respected here. These two things alone make this a place I’ll keep coming back to for years to come.

And the food! Tacos, quesadillas, guacamole - you'll find all the traditional dishes crafted with a twist and combined with local ingredients. Abraham says you don’t have to like everything (though I dare you to find something you don’t). He actually started out with a concept store serving non-Mexican food, but whenever he whipped up Mexican dishes, people kept asking for more. So, when he discovered this space - a spot that seemed almost cursed, as no restaurant managed to stay open there for more than a year - he decided to take a chance. Six years later, Cabreras has brought joy to so many people that it has long broken that curse!

Mexican culture is so full of life and diversity, and as Abraham says, “There are so many Mexicos in Mexico.” Cabreras might surprise you by not being the stereotypical, Corona-serving Mexican restaurant you expect - everything here is thoughtfully chosen and comes together as Abraham’s own unique take on Mexico. And trust me, it’s a Mexico you’ll want to experience!
